"Christmas, if you really get down to the brass tacks
of it, boys and girls, isn’t about reindeer, elves and iPods,
but about mankind’s sin problem and what God did to remedy
it by sending His Son. "
The words of Doug Giles article stick in my mind as I see
the news reporting 'holiday spending' is not slowing down!
I wonder if the feeling of the joy of giving will be remembered
when the bills for it are opened in January.
What a way to start a new year! With debt! Why does any
Christian perpetuate a legacy of lies and debt? "Lies?" you
may ask. Yeah, the whole Santa thing. The day you tell
your child that they can not have something and they tell you
they will just get it from Santa you may regret having started
that. Being honest with yourself, for how long as a child did
you actually believe it? I don't think I ever really did. Chances
are your children don't either. Mine used to wonder why parents
would lie to their children if it weren't true.
It is sad to see Christians buying in to the secular holiday
traditions. Why exactly do you want a white Christmas?
There is very little snow in Isra'el. Does it come from holiday
cartoons with Santa in the North Pole? Romanticized Christmas
cards? Old movies? It has nothing to do with the opening paragraph
of this piece.
The majority of Christians today are leaving a holiday legacy of
lies and debt. Some secular, romanticized notion of something
that is far from what we call a Holy day.
Every year you get a new chance to change that. But it looks like
even with the threat of an economic depression looming before us,
Christians heed the call of something else.
